An international motorcycle theme this week at mono motorcycles.

Blog

Another intensely busy week here at mono motorcycles with a distinctly international theme.

Monday

An intensely busy Monday here at mono motorcycles.

First up on Monday we welcomed a Suzuki Burgman for a service and to assess why its brakes failed on a recent MOT.

Under investigation the brake calipers had clearly been apart before, but incorrect grease had been sprayed all over the inside of them. Furthermore, all of the seals and gaskets were dry and cracking.

Oaklie stripped the calipers down and thoroughly cleaned them. He then installed a caliper repair kit to replace all of the seals and gaskets.

During his investigation he found that the front tyre was dated 2010 and the rear 2018. Our customer authorised the replacement of the front tyre.

Next up Daniel completed an Annual Service on a Triumph Tiger 900 GT. Whoever fitted the last oil filter had tightened it far too tightly, causing it to crumple under all of Daniel’s strength whilst it was removed.

Next up we have welcomed a Ducati 996 to the workshop for a possible charging fault.

The Ducati arrived with a completely dead battery. Using a multimeter Daniel completed a continuity test and found that the starter motor was stuck and this in turn had blown the main fuse.

To allow Daniel to have a base line to work from to see if there are more faults at play or if the starter motor has failed, he ordered a new battery and main fuse. See Wednesday for further updates.

Daniel then completed the flapper delete on one of our regular BMW nineT customers motorcycles.

He then collected another regulars Triumph Street Triple’s in the evening with a possible clutch gone.

Under investigation the clutch was found to be fine, but the nut which holds the front sprocket on had disappeared, hence lack of drive. Once the nut was replaced, the Street Triple ran perfectly.

Daniel also carried out another test on the BMW K1200R we have been trying to get to the root cause of a progressive misfire on.

Having already changed the plugs – all very rusty – and checked the valve clearances (all checked without taking the tank off) Oaklie and Daniel lifted the tank and with much torch shining, unearthed the ultimate culprit.

The intake rubbers from the throttle bodies to the cylinder head had failed and this was the source of the misfire. After contacting our customer, he authorised the parts to be ordered. Once the parts had arrived and been fitted, the K1200R ran beautifully.

Tuesday

D-day today. Ducati and DJK Motorcycles Ltd.

On Monday we welcomed a Ducati Panigale 1199 S for an engine management light assessment. The EML was for the horizontal oxygen sensor. Having received the sensor over night from our good friends W M Snell – Ducati Alton the Panigale now has no EML.

The Ducati 996 from Monday had a new battery and main fuse fitted this. Once Daniel had a running bike and a base to work from, his investigations found that the regulator rectifier had shorted out and in turn had stuck the starter motor. The reg/rec was placed on order.

The next Ducati we welcomed on Tuesday was a Ducati V2S Multistrada. The V2S joined us for pre-sales checks and a new front tyre. Another great sale from DJK Motorcycles Ltd

We also welcomed back the Triumph Tiger 800 XRX from last week for its interim service.

Next up three more sales bikes for DJK Motorcycles Ltd The BMW F750GS and Suzuki V-Strom joined us for pre-sales safety checks and the Honda CB500X joined us for a service and sales checks. All great sales by DJK Motorcycles Ltd

The Churchill Arms bike night

On Tuesday evening we took a ride over  to The Churchill Arms, Alderholt  with Danny from DJK Motorcycles Ltd

Small drama when we had to rescue a dog running in the road and then a lovely lady took it to a vet to hopefully be scanned for a chip to reunite it with its owner.

After our short interlude we rode on to The Churchill Arms bike night.

The Churchill Arms is a pub run by bikers for bikers, and they offer a host of different events and specials for bikers and petrol heads alike. They are also big supporters of Mental Health Motorbike and DocBike Dorset

We love the fact that there is always a bike night menu available and the staff are simply fantastic. The atmosphere is relaxed and the chatter and natter creates a buzz inside and outside. It’s wonderful to see such an eclectic collection of bikes and the marshalling is top notch.

Excellent ride home through the New Forest, Wickham and up over Portsdown hill through the evening haze.

Wednesday

Double birthday celebrations here at mono motorcycles on Wednesday. Oaklie turned 19 and our big floof Axle turned 5.

Catch up day at mono motorcycles.

The Ducati 996 which we had spent two days diagnosing, finally had a brand new regulator rectifier fitted and the bike not only ran, but it was charging at the correct rate. Daniel took the bike for a test ride an all was well.

Our customer was so happy with our help he sent us the following email.

“Evening – just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone there again. You had my 996 in for its electrical fault etc… got it home this evening, running like a dream as expected. Thanks for sorting it in such a tight timeframe. It’s great to know it’s had the attention it deserves 🙏🏼 thanks again. “

Thursday

First up on Friday  we welcomed a BMW R1200RT. The RT joined us to fit Denali D1 spotlights and a Denali Sound Bomb horn which Daniel installed and set up.

Oaklie fitted a Translogic quickshifter to a Ducati 848, changed the brake fluid to Dot 5.1 and changed the tyres.

We also welcomed a Vespa GTS for an annual service and in the afternoon we were catching up with some of our over-hanging bikes which we have been waiting for parts for.

Daniel also got to grips with a Ducati Monster 1200. The Monster is being imported into the UK though an official car/bike import company. Somehow, by the time the bike arrived in the UK it was a complete non-start with the transport company making comments about disconnecting the battery.

Upon investigation Daniel found two main earth straps had been disconnected and taped up. We wonder if this was because the transport company couldn’t access the battery and this was the ‘easier’ option. We can only speculate.

Once unravelled and re-connected, the bike sprang into life.

Tyres

As a Dunlop Pro Dealer we are passionate about providing the very best tyres for the right riding style and motorcycle.

We have seen quite a few tyres this year in various states of disrepair and one of the more common things we see is very old tyres.

Want to know how old your tyres are on your bike? We regularly see tyres that are 10 plus years old. Manufacturers recommend changing tyres every 3-5 years, even if there is still plenty of tread. Some think this is just the tyre manufacturers trying to make more money. It’s not. Rubber degrades and hardens over time even if you’re not using your bike. There is one thing between you and the road so keeping your tyres in good shape is essential.

Want to find out how old your tyres are, look for an oval with 4 numbers in it on one side of the tyre. The first two numbers are the week of manufacture, the second numbers are the year. So the photo shows 4424 that that means this tyre was manufactured October 28 to November 3, 2024.

If you would like guidance on the best tyres for your bike and riding style give us a call or send us an email. #motorcycletyres #motorcycletyresyearandmonth #dunloptyres
