BMW, Triumph, CCM, Honda, Royal Enfield at mono motorcycles this week.
It has been another busy fortnight here at the mono motorcycles workshop and we have welcomed some lovely motorcycles through our doors. We are also busy in the background with some new projects too. Watch this space!
Here is a snapshot of what has been happening here at mono motorcycles over the past couple of weeks.
BMW K1600 GT
We welcomed the K1600 as a non-start. The bike had broken down and was recovered.
Upon arrival we investigated the non-start and found that the starter motor had failed.
Having gained authorisation from our BMW K1600 customer to go ahead with the starter motor replacement, we sourced a new one and fitted it when it arrived.
Once we had fitted the new starter motor, the bike was then started with direct feed, but low voltage at the starter relay led to finding an additional fault with the starter switch.
Our customer authorised the starter switch and once this was fitted, the bike ran like a dream.
One thing which is not often considered is how long it takes to strip a motorcycle down for repair. To gain access to the starter motor it took one and a half hours to strip the bike down. It therefore took another one and half hours to rebuild the bike once the new starter motor and starter switch were replaced.

Honda CX500 Turbo – motogagdet
The Honda CX500 Turbo has joined us this week for a full motogadget installation.
The bike was being built by her now owner and his dad. Sadly, the current owner’s dad passed away before they could finish it, which is why the project has become so important to him.
Daniel has meticulously removed excess wiring and rewired the entire lighting circuit, momentary push switches and dash, whilst also ensuring the new loom is fully removal on a bespoke and waterproof clip system.
The entire re-wire has taken in excess of thirty hours, but the benefits for the bike are priceless.

Triumph Bonneville T100
This week we have welcomed a Triumph Bonneville T100 for a full service, an MOT and some TLC.
Although the T100 was running and was ridden here, it wasn’t running well having been asleep for two years.
Our customer had already run a Cataclean PowerShot Bike fuel additive through the tank which started the process of cleaning the fuelling system. However, we knew we would need to take the carbs off and when we did, we found they were quite green and some of the jets were blocked.
Therefore, the carb bodies were put through the ultrasonic cleaner and the jets cleaned with a solution of mild clock acid and then blown out with the compressor.
Having refitted the carbs, the bike runs better and the rest of the service was completed.
During the service we did find a few more things which need attention. The front brake pads need replacing, the throttle cables have frayed, the chain/sprockets need replacing, the horn doesn’t work, and the indicators are not working.
Our customer has authorised the additional repairs and we will get back on the bike once the parts have arrived.

CCM Scrambler
We welcomed a stunning dark green CCM Scrambler to the mono motorcycles workshop this week. The Scrambler joined us for an Annual Service and to replace the battery.
This CCM didn’t have the correct engine oil or clutch fluid, which we have now corrected.
We have also updated its map and adjusted the throttle body as per the CCM schedule.

Royal Enfield 350 Classic
We also welcomed a lovely Royal Enfield 350 Classic to the mono motorcycles workshop this week.
The 350 Classic joined us this morning for an Interim Service.

In house training day.
At mono motorcycles we believe in passing on our accumulated knowledge to the next generation and have set aside today for an in-house training day.
Daniel is slowly imparting his 36 years of motorcycle repair knowledge to Oaklie.
mono motorcycles are well known for our electrical and motogadget wiring expertise. However, the fundamentals of wiring are routed in an understanding of electrical systems, currents, volts, amps, etc and are based on exact and precise working practises.
It is this knowledge and these skills which Daniel has been focussing on with Oaklie this week.
From understanding how different gauge wire can direct different currents, to the differences between a dry solder and a precise solder; Oaklie is learning why not getting these things right can affect conductivity, cause damage to a motorcycle and affect the longevity of any electrical work.
The Triumph Thunderbird Storm is being used as the basis for Oaklies sessions this week.
The Thunderbird having had momentary push switches fitted elsewhere, then lost its speedo. Our customer asked us to assess and repair.
Upon inspection the work has not been completed to a very high standard and there are several examples of the incorrect gauge wire being used, incorrect wiring and the switching not being addressed which is causing conductivity issues.
Daniel will complete a more in-depth technical analysis of the wiring and why the system has not been completed safely or with precision.
