From the thunderous Kawasaki Z1000 to the smooth BMW1250GS HP; it really has been a week of extremes at mono motorcycles.
What a truly eventful & packed week we have had at mono motorcycles. From the thunderous Kawasaki Z1000 to the smooth BMW1250GS HP; it really has been a week of extremes at mono motorcycles.
We began the week with the growling Kawasaki Z1000 joining us for a full valve clearance service & detailing.
Our customer noted that the Z1000 felt a little hesitant. When Daniel road tested it in the first case, he could not pin down any specific hesitance. However, what he did feel was a very minor hesitation in the initial stages of acceleration after changing gear. This was considered to be either the open exhaust causing too much air to mix, the ECU being in need re-mapping or the potential of having a power commander fitted, to enable consistent fuelling.
During the major service process, Daniel discovered that 7 valve shims needed replacing. As we have mentioned before, valve clearance checks are important as they can identify underlying issues with performance. If intermittent performance issues are not investigated, it can lead to engine damage in the long term.
Following a full machine detail & ACF50 treatment, the Z1000 was road tested & returned to the customer gleaming.
The Triumph Daytona 675 which has been laid up over winter joined us for an interim service & pre-season check.
We then welcomed a Yamaha XT660 to the workshop, which swept Daniel back to his motorcross days. The XT660 underwent an interim service & a snow foam wash to shake the road dirt from her.
In between the servicing & detailing, the Victory 8 Ball has now been concluded & is ready for return to her owner.
We have continued to work on the Harley Davidson Dyna Superglide this week, as the parts have now arrived from Harley Davidson.
The first phase was for Daniel to re-wire the switching panel. The Harley was built without a neutral switch, which is a current MOT failure. After some considerations for aesthetics, Daniel has decided to add a neutral switch light to the existing panel & add a high/low beam light to the headlight casing, in a much similar way as traditional classic motorcycles have.
The second phase of works to the Harley this week was to replace the rocker gaskets. However, herein lies the rub. As the Harley has been customised & the chassis extended; the frame has been welded with a panel having being welded over where you would usually have access points for the rocker cover bolts to be released.
Therefore, with some dexterity & modification of an allen key; Daniel managed to get his fingers between the frame & the rocker cover & very carefully undo the bolts. He then had to take all 3 parts of the rocker cover out sideways through the gap between the frame.
Our Triumph bitsa returned home this week, after we had discovered that the speedo fitted prior to her arrival, was actually designed for a 12v battery (Triumph/CB200 ran a 6v) & would therefore never run on the 6v Triumph. To overcome this, Daniel fitted a bicycle speedo, which being small & compact, didn’t impact on the overall appearance of the Triumph.
We welcomed a Honda VFR750 to the workshop on Thursday for a set of new tyres.
As bikers we must remember that rubber is the only thing between you & the road, so keeping an eye on your tyre tread & the age of your tyres is really important.
A simple check can show how old your tyres are. On the tyre wall, you will find a 4 digit number in an oval. This is the week & the year your tyres were made. Our example below ‘2118’ means they were made in the 21st week of 2018.
mono motorcycles recommend changing tyres at least every 2-3 years & monitoring tyre tread regularly. The legal limit on motorcycle tyres is 1mm across the 3 central quarters of the tread
The first of 3 BMW guests had her new starter motor fitted midweek & now returns to the road as a reliable running machine.
We welcomed two brand new BMW1250GS HP’s to the workshop on Friday with less than 200 miles on them between them! Both HP’s were with us for some additional add on’s: SAT NAV, USB charger & lighting upgrades.
Our events calendar now includes two motorcycle safety & basic motorcycle maintenance sessions. One is specifically designed for Ladies only & the other for everyone. The sessions are named at novices & new riders who want to feel more confident about their own machines & the basic safety knowledge for making sure they are road worthy.
Our breakfast clubs start again as of the 28th April & we look forward to seeing familiar faces & welcoming those new to the mono motorcycles community.
