Triumph, Suzuki, CCM, BMW, KTM, Kawasaki and more at mono motorcycles this week

Blog

The sun is shining and the weekend ahead looks like the weather (in the South at least) is perfect biking weather.

We have been very busy here at mono motorcycles and here is a snapshot of some of the bikes we have welcomed through our doors this week.

Monday

On Monday we completed work on the Triumph Street Triple with the burnt-out stator.

We then welcomed a stunning Triumph T120 for pre-sales checks. Another great sale for @ DJK Motorcycles Ltd and a Suzuki Hayabusa joined us for an Annual Service and an MOT and a Triumph Tiger Explorer XRT for Annual Servicing and timing chain tensioner replacement.

Daniel completed the fork stanchion replacement and fork seals on the Suzuki GSX-R 1000.

Unfortunately, the stanchions needed replacing due to the finish flaking off the stanchions themselves.

Therefore, in discussion with our customer we found a decent pair on eBay second hand.

However, when the second-hand units arrived although the stanchions were good the rest of the forks look a bit used. Therefore, we stripped both pairs and built one decent set.

We also welcomed one of the giants of the motorcycling world, the Triumph Rocket III.

The Rocket joined us for a Major Service, assess/repair electrical fault linked to movement of the ignition from the front to the side and fitting of a throttle stabiliser cruise control.

In between all this Daniel (assisted by Oaklie) completed two MOTs.

Tuesday

First up on Tuesday we welcomed a Yamaha MT-09 to adjust the chain we fitted a couple of weeks ago.

Next up a KTM 790 Duke joined us for an Annual Service.

Next, we welcomed a Yamaha YZF 125 for rear pads, rear disc and a new chain.

Then Daniel moved on to a Triumph Thunderbird to replace the exhaust and rear cans, whilst Oaklie fitted a new set of tyres to a KTM Super Adventure.

Wednesday

Not all of our stories have a happy ending.

Although these stories are very, very rare for us, they do highlight why it is so important to keep on top of maintenance and safety checks for a motorcycle.

Suzuki 125 moped.

The moped was booked in with us for a service and general health check. The bike was the owners only mode of transport and he had not long purchased the bike. During the service the oil was found to be black and very thin and unfortunately the following list was also identified under inspection:

1/ Rear brake doesn’t work and is on the maximum adjustment.

2/ Rear brake shoes need replacing urgently.

3/ Rear tyre is bald.

4/ Front brake disc needs replacing.

5/ Front brake pads are on the metal.

6/ Kick start lever is missing.

7/ Handlebar fairing not secure.

8/ Work has been competed on back of ignition barrel and taped in place. Not safe.

9/ No oil seal on sump.

10/ Right side light doesn’t work.

11/ Front brake switch doesn’t work.

12/ Throttle cable on its maximum adjustment.

We also found that the back wheel was very loose and the bolt not done up correctly.

We had to have a very honest conversation with our customer about the fact that the costs of repair might outweigh the costs of the bike. These conversations happen so rarely, it was really upsetting to have to let the young man know.

Kawasaki ZX6.

The ZX6 was booked in with us after the customer had noted that having over wintered the bike and taken it out on a couple of spring rides, the bike suddenly started to make a knocking noise.

He also booked in a full service and an MOT.

At arrival Daniel checked the sight glass and there was no oil in the bike. He then added 2.4 ltrs of oil and then and only then did the oil start to show in the sight glass.

Daniel then tried to get the bike to start. Unfortunately during the start up cycle we could clearly hear a very concerning heavy knocking sound and it was not a timing chain sound.

Our customer had let us know that he had ridden the bike last summer before over wintering the bike. Sadly, having heard this knocking a couple of times over the years, it certainly sounded like the bike had sustained crank bearing damage. In these cases repairs are not really an economic solution.

We contacted our customer and advised him of our findings. He was shocked about the lack of oil and didn’t have any idea why the bike had been running with no oil in it.

Unfortunately, there is a chance that the bike had been running with no oil for a while, hence the damage to the engine.

We have shared these stories today because as we said at the start, not all of our stories have a happy ending. Sometimes, (very – very rarely) a motorcycle is beyond repair and is simply not economically viable to repair.

If you are ever concerned about the status of your motorcycle, we do offer a Safety Check service which provides a visual check of all working parts, tyres, fluid levels, etc and can support recommendations for the future. The safety checks can take between 30 minutes to an hour depending on the make/model of motorcycle.

Thursday

On Thursday we had a busy day of catching up with work which had been started during the week.

In between this, we completed presales checks on a BMW R1200GS and BMW 9T Scrambler. Both motorcycles are currently for sale through DJK Motorcycles Ltd

Friday

On Friday, Daniel was working on another stunning CCM Bobber today. The Bobber joined us for its first service. Our customer has also asked us to check the clutch and brakes.

Oaklie was working on the Suzuki V-Strom 1050 which joined us for full servicing and an MOT.
