Full throttle busy workshop, S Bomb visit & motogadget wiring

Blog

Wow! What a busy week & it just keeps coming! We are now fully booked through until mid June & already have bookings as far out as September!

Last weekend although we were meant to exhibit at Kickback, we took the decision to step back from work for a weekend & take a short break to recharge our batteries.

Sunday S Bomb

As part of our weekend away, we headed down to Poole & visited S Bomb on Poole Harbour. Some of you may have seen S Bomb featured in the BBC 2 programme The Speedshop which airs Sunday evenings & can also been found on the BBC iPlayer. We have been following Titch’s (proprietor of S Bomb) progress for some time now & it is great that an independent business like his is being showcased on national television.

Titch left a 10-year career in UK special forces (Special Boat Service) to follow his dream – designing, building & selling custom vintage motorcycles. In 2016, Titch converted a waterfront derelict former shellfish processing plant into his vintage workshop, using reclaimed & up-cycled materials to create what he describes as a ‘souped-up man-cave’, where he now builds his unique creations. Alongside Billy, former Royal Tank Regiment operative & John, former Royal electrical & Mechanical Engineer; the team build & customise bikes & cars.

S Bomb is a very cool place to hang out. Katie who runs the Café & events at S Bomb was so welcoming & although she was knackered; she has such a bubbly, friendly personality. We grabbed a hot chocolate (it was freezing) & settled in to watch The Speedshop on the big screen at S Bomb.

Coop’s (Jane Cooper – Artist) who is featured in The Speedshop came down for a visit & Daniel also got an opportunity to meet John Nelson from John Nelson Ltd, a likeminded wiring guru & they got chatting. John is an engineer in his own right, who also works with Titch & Billy at S BOMB Vintage Workshop & features in BBC 2’s The Speedshop.

What was incredible was being taken to the S Bomb workshop for an up close view of the incredible Royal Enfield sidecar outfit the S Bomb/Speedshop team put together for Toby Gutteridge in the first episode of The Speedshop.

Toby was paralysed while on operations in the SAS & now needs a ventilator to breathe. The S Bomb team worked alongside the respirator manufacturer to ensure it would be safe for Toby to ride in the sidecar.  The paintwork having been completed by Debbie Nelson of Ringo’s Custom Design, is a masterful piece of artistry. What an incredible project & how liberating for Toby.

Such a wonderful evening surrounded by equally wonderful people.

Set your clocks & don’t miss an episode of The Speedshop at 8pm Sunday BBC2. Watch how Titch, John & Billy transform 2, 3 & 4 wheeled machines at the S BOMB Vintage Workshop & set each other hilarious challenges, whilst supporting all manner of worthy causes in the process. Catch up with the incredible talent of Jane Cooper – Artist Coop’s, the fabulous artistry of Debbie Nelson from Ringo’s Custom Design & support local independent businesses while you do so. Don’t forget you can catch up with any missed episodes on the BBC iPlayer.

Tuesday

On Tuesday it was back to the workshop at full throttle.

The GSXR 1000 we had in just over a  week ago for a major service came back back with a small oil leak. The culprit is the inadequate bolts R&G provide with their engine covers. Cheaply made they are loose on the threads; this causes the oil to run up the threads & drip out. This is not the first time we have seen this with their engine covers bolts. We have now upgraded the bolts to A2 stainless steel bolts which are a much better fit & added some small copper washers.

Wednesday

Nathan stripped, replaced & refitted the forks on this Honda Fonza 300 after changing the fork seals. Another great sale for DJK Motorcycles.

The next motogadget installation arrived in the shape of a mostly complete Honda CB550 Custom Café. Daniel managed a few hours on it today & modified the brackets to hold the m.unit, drilled out the spotwelds & mounted the starter relay on the back of the bracket & mounted the m.unit on the front.

On the other side Daniel modified the battery box & added a battery strap, then over to Ben at BM Fabrications who re-powder coated the brackets. Also wired & mounted the switches. Tomorrow we will make a start on the wiring.

Thursday

Today we welcomed a stunning Triumph Bonneville T100 Cafe Racer for safety checks & servicing. Another great sale for DJK Motorcycles.

Daniel Morris – AKA The Wiring Whisperer – at his craft. The Honda CB550 Custom Cafe Racer motogadget wiring is well underway. Each wire is meticulously & carefully routed, wrapped & connected. With exacting precision Daniel manages to hide wiring neatly away & the irony of this is that all of this will be hidden from view once the wiring is complete, keeping the clean lines of the motorcycle customisation intact. The artistry of the craft.

Friday

A Frantic Friday at the mono motorcycles workshop! Nathan & Daniel started the day assessing the clutch issues with the Triumph Thunderbird (ably assisted by Sprocket) & discovered that the clutch cable was solid. It was also found that the cable was resting on top of the exhaust, which could explain why the cable felt so solid. A new cable is on order & will be with us Monday.

Nathan then then got onto the Service & Safety Check for the BMW 650GS, another great sale by DJK Motorcycles Ltd & Daniel got back on the Honda CB550 motogadget wiring.
