Motorcycle service, track bike prep, mono elekTrik & GSX-R Slingshot restoration

Blog

We mentioned a fortnight ago that it looked like Spring was finally on its way.

Well, based on this week’s weather, winter seems to have come back with a vengeance. Daniel has got soaked three times this week out on road test!

Anyway, we all know better weather is on its way and we need to hold on to that belief. Riding season for most of us is just around the corner.

Despite the weather, it’s been a busy week here at mono motorcycles. Let’s take a look.

Monday

On Monday we welcomed a beautiful Suzuki GSX-R 750 in for a Translogic Quickshifter, uprated Brembo master cylinder, rear pads & different end can. The owner of the GSX-R plans to head out on track later this year and wanted the very best quality items to ensure his track experience was fun but safe.

We are now agents for Translogic systems, please call for an estimate on their products and installations.

As we seem to have seen a touring bike theme this week, we welcomed the second of three Tigers we will have seen in a fortnight.

Last week we welcomed a regular customers Triumph Tiger 1200 XRT for Major Servicing. Although these bikes usually sail through a Major service, in this case two of the exhaust valves were found to be tight this time. Therefore, 2 shims were replaced.

The second Tiger was a Triumph Tiger 800 XRT. The 800 XRT joined us for new headstock bearings, servicing and new tyres. Another great sale from DJK Motorcycles.

As everyone knows Sprocket is clearly workshop manager. Here he is telling Daniel that he’s doing a really good job

Tuesday

A day of extremes!

In the morning Daniel commenced the rebuild  the rebuild of the Suzuki GSX-R750 Slingshot engine. He fitted all 16 of the valves by hand which is more complicated than it looks!

In the afternoon Daniel carried on wiring the motogadget system in our ‘elekTrik9T’ electric Honda C90 Cub.

We originally used a Shanghai Customs eCub kit to build the bike from an authentic Honda C90 Cub frame. Daniel has now removed the original lighting circuits and installed a motogadget m.unit blue running from an additional 12v battery.

To charge the 12v battery, Daniel has added a DC-DC controller. The DC/DC controller steps down the 52v (cub battery) to 13.5v to charge the small battery which in turn can run the m.unit. Once complete our cub will be up for sale!

Wednesday

The Suzuki GSX-R 750 Slingshot restoration has now shifted up a gear. The engine having been professionally vapour blasted and cerakoted by the wizard Wesley at Hi-Spec Coatings and Vapour Blasting looks factory new. Daniel started the engine rebuild with a dry build first to ensure everything was exact. He has then taken the engine all apart and fitted the gaskets ready for the next phase.

Thursday

It was touring bike Thursday at mono motorcycles. First up on the ramp was the third Tiger of the fortnight, a Triumph Tiger XRx which joins us for interim servicing and arranging an MOT.

Second up on the ramp was the BMW R1200 GS which also joins us for servicing and arranging an MOT.

Friday

Friday was a busy one.

The two extremes for servicing were the Ducati Multistrada and brand new Honda Super Cub. Honda have done a really good job with the Super Cub. All the cool associated with the Cub series, but utilizing modern composites and manufacturing methods.

The Yamaha YBR 125 Custom joined us for replacement fork stanchions. We ordered these as full legs as they come completely built and are a less expensive way of replacing the stanchions and fork seals. We have also fitted new chain and sprockets.

The Yamaha Diversion joined us for a full carb strip. Although we tend to steer clear of carb work, we did originally ultrasonically clean and rebuild these carbs in April 2021. Unfortunately due to Covid, the bike has only run about 50 miles since and arrived as a non start.

Despite Daniel’s best efforts to get all cylinders firing on a combination of clean fuel and carb cleaner, the Diversion wasn’t having any of it.

Therefore, the carbs have now had to come apart. However, as can be seen from the picture, they have not faired too well being left long term. Despite a fuel defender having been added to the tank, as the bike has hardly been run, the engine has not befitted from getting warm enough to circulate the fuel and the defender regularly enough to protect the insides of the carbs.

mono motorcycles sustainability

We have recently been working with Coryton, a UK based sustainable fuel manufacturer.

Coryton’s slogan “While the world talks about the electric future, SUSTAIN® is a solution for now” will resonate with many in the transport sector.

Coryton’s SUSTAIN® is part of Coryton’s responsibly blended bioethanol and bio-gasoline portfolio which can enable today’s vehicles to produce less greenhouse gas while using the infrastructure already in place.

We hope you find our video informative and lets collectively save the internal combustion engine. Share with your friends. Share with groups, dealerships, politicians (if you know any) literally anyone in the motorcycle community and let’s get the conversation about sustainable fuels going.
