Motorcycle diagnostics, servicing, custom bike wiring and events at mono motorcycles

Blog

It’s been a busy fortnight here at mono motorcycles and a broad spectrum of bikes have joined us.

Let’s take a look at some of the bikes we have welcomed through our doors and the various work we have undertaken.

Honda Blackbird, Royal Enfield 350 and Kawasaki KLX.

A new customer to mono motorcycles asked us to service all three of his motorcycles and arrange MOT’s for them.

Over the space of a week, we cycled them through one after the other. Each bike in the collection serves a different purpose.

The Honda CBR1100XX Blackbird has the power, but is smooth. The Royal Enfield 350 although on a 58 plate, was actually an Indian import and a much older machine than it’s registration plate indicated. The Enfield in technical terms ‘pottered’ along, an easy sedate ride.

The Kawasaki KLX joined us fresh from the Welsh hills where it had been off road. Fit for purpose the KLX, still with Welsh mud on its wheels benefitted from some fresh oil, new filter and a full MOT.

Oaklie turns 17 in August and last weekend he put a deposit down on his first new bike.

The Suzuki GSXR 125 has now been reserved for him until August and he cannot wait to get on the road.

His 50cc Derbi, affectionately known as ‘Triggers broom’, will soon be a thing of the past!

Huge thanks to the staff at Haslemere Motorcycles for looking after Oaklie and making this milestone purchase such a great experience for him.

Incorrect metal compound, incorrect length or incorrect thread bolts can damage your bike!

The BMW R1150GS we welcomed last week for discs, pads and throttle cable also arrived with a minor oil leak.

Upon inspection one of the rocker cover bolts had sheered and the oil was leaking out of the gasket. Once removed, it was further noted that the bolts were slightly too long alerting us to the fact that they were possibly not the original BMW bolts.

It is suspected that as the bolt was slightly too long when it was tightened it had bottomed out against the cylinder head.

Because the non-genuine bolt in the bike was stainless steel it also had no flex under pressure. It was only when we received the genuine bolt from BMW did we become aware that the bolts which had been fitted were clearly incorrect. The genuine BMW bolts are made of zinc plated steel and are the correct length.

As Daniel undid the sheered bolt and then set to re-threading and tapping the bolt, the already weakened bolt wall broke away.

Unfortunately, this is what can happen when non-genuine, incorrect metal/alloy or the wrong thread bolts are used.

The damage incorrect gauge bolts can cause can be expensive.

We have informed our customer and have sent the head to be professionally laser welded.

Triumph Thruxton 900

The week commencing 8th May  we welcomed a Triumph Thruxton 900 in for some extensive mods.

Daniel’s initial focus was to strip the bike down and fabricate of parts.

With the wiring harness removed from the Triumph Thruxton, Daniel was able to focus on the fabrication element of the modification.

Two bespoke trays are needed to house the motogadget m.unit, ECU and antigravity battery.

The next phase of the motogadget wiring and modifications involved Daniel fitting the motone momentary push switches and the motogadget chronoclassic clock bracket.

motogadget is a way of future proofing your custom motorcycle, while creating a stylish and minimalistic look.

Triumph Thunderbird

The Thunderbird arrived with an intermittent cutting out fault. Following a series of tests, Daniel found that the bike had in intermittent spark. The Thunderbird having started, would then cut out, fail to start, then start again once it had cooled down for a moment.

This behaviour led him to suspect the crank shaft sensor was faulty. Using a noid light shows that it is the sensor at fault.
